No doubt about it, it's the Fugees (who were sort of reunited in Dave Chapelle's Block Party)

I was all set to go with Buffalo Springfield -- the group's "Retrospective" album has been a staple on my Top 10 list for years. But a fast bit of online research revealed that Bruce Palmer, the group's original bass player, passed away a few years ago. So instead I'd go with the Byrds -- I mean, I think all those guys are still alive and kicking (though whether they're all "capable" is probably a much more subjective matter!). Speaking of which, can anyone tell me why Roger McGuinn changed his name to Jim McGuinn? Or was it the other way around?? Their drummer, Michael Clarke, died of liver failure in 1993 and two years before that, Gene Clark, who often sang lead on many of their hits, passed away...weeks after their induction into the R&R HOF. So, ya gotta come up with another! Jim became Roger somewhere around '68. He'd joined some religious sect and they told him that he needed to find a name that was of his choosing...a name that would represent who he was. Personally, I think 12-string Rick would have done it (subtext: Rickenbacker guitar, which he made sing!) but, since he's a fan of airplanes, jet propulsion, etc., he chose Roger...the word pilots use to mean "I understand". Legally, however, his name is still Jim (James) but I once read that he changed his middle name from Joseph to Roger. I say...just shut up and sing. I think the Kinks qualify ... and so do personal favorites of mine, the original Manfred Mann lineup (many of whom are still active in one or both lineups of The Manfreds and The Blues Band, two aggregations that unfortunately don't tour the U.S.). |
