Disaster Area

Well, our county has been declared a disaster area due to flooding (10 to 14 inches of rain on June 12). All of the bridges have been washed away or undermined and most of the roads have some damage from water. My husband is a volunteer firefighter and those men and women have been working the past three days--putting up barricades, checking culverts, checking the roads so they can figure out how to get to people if there is an emergency, directing traffic. It is nothing compared to what the people in Iowa are going through. But now we are eligible for federal funding to help repair roads and bridges which our townships and county cannot afford to do. I have to say that the EMS personnel have done a fantastic job and I am very proud of my husband and all of them for working so hard. However, there is some more rain forecast . . . so please say a prayer that it does not come to pass!!

Hi Rox .. I will say a prayer for all of you and everyone who has been affected by all the rain and flooding. I have been very fortunate here in my town in Wisconsin .. not even any water in my basement. Not everyone has been so fortunate. I feel terrible for all of the families who are struggling to recover. My hope is that all who can step in to help will .. this makes all the difference. It's people like you and your husband who make a difference!

When we were in New Orleans earlier this year we saw a t-shirt that said:

Thanks, Betty. I know people in other places are so much worse off. And everyone here is very thankful that there were no injuries at all--which is a miracle considering all of the damage

i had read about the situation in iowa, rox, but didnt realize it affected you too. a couple of january's ago, we had a bad ice storm and our power was out for 72 hours, but people in the next county had no idea about our situation! it made me realize how the news cant always be depended on.

of course you are in my prayers!

Thank you, Rosebear. We are just a little county in northern Michigan. Not a huge population area. So we do not seem to merit much news--unless lots of people are killed or injured by the storms.

We are fine! We live on a part of the highway that is intact with no damage. I am most grateful. Thanks for your concern, karensk!! My hubby has put in about 40 hours in the last 3 days with the other people from the volunteer fire dept. they have done an awesome job checking our roads and routes to homes in case of an emergency. the Salvation Army has been providing food for them since they are gone for such long hours. It has been wonderful to see so many working together!
