I am just curious as to who you think were the greatest dancers/actors of the Hey Dey of Hollywood.

I am prompted by the announcement of the death of Cyd Charisse. I have admired and emulated her in my own dancing since I was young and will miss her greatly.

Here she is with Gene Kelly in singing in the rain, if you need a refresher.

I also miss Danny Kaye, Gene Kelly and Ann Miller.

Every time one of these candles goes out, I am a bit sad, but also grateful to have known of their works.

Who do you remember?

Who did you think was the best?

Who was the epitome of the Hollywood 40's and 50's musicals?

Let's sit back and remember...

There was only one.

Mr. Bojangles. Not songs about him, but for crying out bleeping loud, Bill Bojangles.

I liked Gene Kelly's athleticism. Fred Astair's grace. Donald O'Connor's acrobatic skills. Danny Kaye's comedy.

I agree with Donald in this list as well. I think you identified their individual strengths very well. I have a friend who always tells me to include Frank Sinatra in this group...but I just can't.

Mr. Bojangles...very cool addition to the list.

Oh and scarecrow...how about Ray Bolger, your namesake? Remember that seven up commercial he did late in his life?

Ray never achieved the stardom of the others. Lots of competition back then for dancers/actors.

Danny Kaye was a gem--a true entertainer and humanitarian [extensive UN work with children]. I miss his rapid-fire songs.

Fred Astair routines were almost inhuman, but I'd vote Ginger Rogers. As one wag put it: "She did everything HE did, but did it backwards and in high heels" !

Hey, couldn't Sammy Davis Jr dance, too?

Can't forget the Nicholas Brothers--Fayard & Harold. They truly revolutionized tap. I've never seen two stronger and more fearless dancers.
