simple cold when you're over 40...

I have young children, but I am over 40.

Because they are in school they are exposed to colds, and one of them came home with a cold.

I caught the cold, and instead of going away after a day or two (like it did for my daughter) I have been sick for 3 weeks!

I eat healthy, exercise, take vitamins, so the only factor that seems to be different is the age factor.

Has anyone else encountered this phenomenon?

I'm just getting over one of those 3 week colds! I found the biggest difference is you really do require more rest to kick it. You can take all the herbal remedies and over the counter drugs you like, but unless you get enough rest, it just lingers. I made an effort to go to bed at least 1 hour earlier for a week and I finally saw some results. So, use those great mothering instincts you have, and baby yourself!

I remember an old saying that some people swore by. "Starve a fever, feed a cold". But, somewhere along the way, modern thinking flipped it to"Feed a fever, starve a cold". I wonder if either way would help at all.

As we age, our immune system doesn't work as well. After this experience, you might want to consider getting a flu shot this year! Eating well and exercising can help to keep your immune system healthy.

Hi galaxyfaraway, welcome to my world (or galaxy). I had kids at 39 and 44, and every cold they would get for 24 hours, I would get for 2 weeks.

I was feeling triumphant today because I avoided my 9-year-old daughter's cold of last week....but superstitiously, maybe I shouldn't say anything....

That said, before I had kids, in my 20s and 30s, I also got colds that lasted. Just not as frequently exposed.

The way i understand the rationale behind this is that when you have a fever, your body is using all kinds of calories to produce that heat, so you should eat more to compensate. The downside is that (for me, at least) when you have a fever, you really don't feel like eating anything.

Likewise, when you have a cold, your metabolism slows down, so you don't have to eat as much.
