What do you call this symbol:

I was on the phone with a friend, trying to give her the code to the security gate at the entrance to our housing development. The "#" had to be pushed before the four numbers. I kept saying "hit the pound key" and she kept saying "What?"

Finally I realized she had no idea what the pound key was. She called it the "number sign". (Okay, it's that, too.) She's from Minnesota. Maybe that's the reason...

I always knew it to be the pound key when using the phone, but it also is a number symbol.

for example.. The lucky number is #42! hehe

And also, when I hear the word pound it tends to make me think of pound cake, which then brings strawberries to mind, and quickly following is the thought of whip cream. Just a minute, I'll be right back, I've gotta go get something to eat...
