DVDs to enjoy with grandkids

The holidays are coming up and around our place, that means extra time to hang out with our almost-11-year-old grandson. We live in a cold climate, so we watch a lot of DVDs. The Incredibles, the Shrek movies, Home Alone...we've seen all the obvious choices a few times too often. In our quest to rise above the obvious, we've tried Blazing Saddles and scored a huge hit. (Trust me, the campfire scene is funniest when you watch it with a kid.) Does anybody else have suggestions for adult movies that might spark either a great bonding experience or a great conversation (e.g., Treasure of the Sierra Madre) with a kid?

The Princess Bride has long been a favorite of mine. Don't be put off by the title -- it has lots of swashbuckling action.

How about the Indiana Jones movies? Star Wars? Jurassic Park? Back to the Future?
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Willow
batteries not included
are all movies my daughter enjoyed when she was younger.

My grandchildren are younger than your grandson but they love the Shrek movies, and the Incredibles. Also, they like Heloise--there are several about her that are quite fun. Holes is a good one--my grown kids still like it, and there are the classics like Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, or the newer Pirates of the Carribean that are worth watching. Good luck! How about playing some games such as scrabble, monopoly, gin rummy? We play a lot of games in our family--it makes for some great interaction. Apples to applies is a good newer game. Give it a try!

Young Frankenstein... the movie that convinced my child there was a point to black and white films.

"Secondhand Lions" - Haley Joel Osment, Michael Caine, and Robert Duvall. It's probably corny, but the actors are so fine that it's worth watching.

If your grandson likes scary movies, I can recommend the original "The Haunting" - I was about his age when I saw it the first time. It made my hair stand straight up, but there's nothing graphic and no gore. There are some real solid startles, though.

In the realm of scary movies, but also thoughtful - "Sixth Sense". My son and I went to see that when he was eleven. It actually brought up some really interesting discussions about what you'll do to help people, even when its scary or unpleasant.

For silly comedy - "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Michael Caine and Steve Martin. My son and I still watch it, and he's 19.

Also for silly comedy - "Mystery Men" or "Galaxy Quest".

"Secondhand Lio...

Winn Dixie has a dog in the movie. Sandlot might be good for a boy 11 yrs. Any Bad news Bears

movies. I recommend the ones with Walter Mauttau.

Herbie the Lovebug. Again I would go old school with the original cast. Fivel the Mouse movies are great for boys. Mary Poppins is always a fav.

If he likes baseball, Angels in the Outfield was a great hit with my sons. If he likes basketball try Air Jordan movie-cartoon show.

Another dog movie, try:Old Yeller or Big Red.

These are intriguingly unexpected suggestions. It's Interesting that you mentioned Young Frankenstein--my grandson loves that one, even though he has no understanding at all of what it's spoofing. We already own and like Sixth Sense, so must give that one a try. Our ideal family movie is one that all generations can enjoy--not just the watching but the conversation afterwards.
