Gratitude Journal

There is an article in today's Times that reminds me that keeping a list of the things for which you are thankful can make you happier. Being thankful for a tiny act, the author writes, "was far more satisfying because it felt more immediate and genuine. So I was grateful for the free parking space I found at the train station, for the fruit vendor who finally had some ripe bananas..."

I didn't find ripe bananas, but I am going to start writing down a daily list of things I'm grateful for. There was a thread on this earlier in TBD, but let's start fresh on Thanksgiving.

I am thankful that I do not have to drive anywhere today, everything and everyone is already here.

Thursday: I am grateful to live in a city of vibrant Asian neighborhoods where -- when I lack a crucial ingredient for our Thanksgiving dinner -- I can walk to an open produce store for sweet potatoes.

Thank you, Robin. It is necessary for us to step away from the rants, our social issues, work pressures, and general depressions. Happiness is not guaranteed in life, so we must find it hidden along the way. I am thankful to the lady who let me cut in traffic today at the mall, despite it being 'black friday'.! Whew!

I'm grateful for the head rubs, back scratches, neck and shoulder massages my wife gave me during our multi-hour cook-a-thon Thursday morning.

I'm grateful she and I had a great time cooking together: She, the green bean casserole (http://tinyurl.com/yq35s6) and me, the dressing (URL to follow when I find it.)

I'm thankful I have family (imperfect though they are) with which to celebrate Thanksgiving.

I'm thankful for the paradoxical grace of God that keeps me alive and in my right mind.

And, on the most concrete, I'm grateful God shows me every day how to pull my head just a bit further out of my ass.

I don't know that I'm disciplined enough to write in a journal everyday for any reason. But there have been numerous times when I was in a little bit of a funk that I pulled out a piece of paper and listed everything I was grateful for--big or small.

It didnt necessarily make me jump up and kick my heels together. But it always somehow moved my attitude in a more positive direction.

I'll keep doing it.
