Writing down everything you eat is a good way to lose weight, so everyone says. I've tried this, including a few entries in tbd's weight loss camp. But I was discouraged by reading everyone else's virtuous reports, especially as compared to my all too typical: "dinner at book group: cheese, crackers, grapes, cookies."
But now I've declared an emergency. After two trips -- to Berlin and New Orleans -- I decided not to consult a scale, because why get depressed. On top of that there's been living with an Italian student who is a fabulous cook, especially pasta. And then using massive antibiotic treatment (for lyme disease) as excuse not to go to the gym.
So finally I confronted the number, which let me just say is a three pounds above my absolute maximum, time to hit the brakes, number. Oh dear. And right before Thanksgiving weekend, which is my most challenging food environment of the year. We always spend the long weekend with friends who have delicious fattening food just lying around, including cookies for the teenagers, usually also eaten by me. This year there is even a plan for s'mores. Pies every night, with ice cream if you want it. And why not, it's Thanksgiving.
So this year I decided that I'd write down I didn't eat:
Day one:
During five hour drive to house:
Didn't eat: whole slice of bread (only corner)
Before dinner:
Didn't eat: cheese on crackers (only tuna spread on crackers)
Didn't drink: gin and tonic with regular tonic (diet tonic instead)
Dinner:
Didn't eat: delicious French bread with butter
Breakfast:
Didn't eat: Portuguese sweet bread with butter and sour cherry jam
Lunch:
Didn't eat:
Cheese, again.
More to come . . . . .
