What I Didn't Eat

Writing down everything you eat is a good way to lose weight, so everyone says. I've tried this, including a few entries in tbd's weight loss camp. But I was discouraged by reading everyone else's virtuous reports, especially as compared to my all too typical: "dinner at book group: cheese, crackers, grapes, cookies."

But now I've declared an emergency. After two trips -- to Berlin and New Orleans -- I decided not to consult a scale, because why get depressed. On top of that there's been living with an Italian student who is a fabulous cook, especially pasta. And then using massive antibiotic treatment (for lyme disease) as excuse not to go to the gym.

So finally I confronted the number, which let me just say is a three pounds above my absolute maximum, time to hit the brakes, number. Oh dear. And right before Thanksgiving weekend, which is my most challenging food environment of the year. We always spend the long weekend with friends who have delicious fattening food just lying around, including cookies for the teenagers, usually also eaten by me. This year there is even a plan for s'mores. Pies every night, with ice cream if you want it. And why not, it's Thanksgiving.

So this year I decided that I'd write down I didn't eat:

Day one:

During five hour drive to house:

Didn't eat: whole slice of bread (only corner)

Before dinner:

Didn't eat: cheese on crackers (only tuna spread on crackers)

Didn't drink: gin and tonic with regular tonic (diet tonic instead)

Dinner:

Didn't eat: delicious French bread with butter

Breakfast:

Didn't eat: Portuguese sweet bread with butter and sour cherry jam

Lunch:

Didn't eat:

Cheese, again.

More to come . . . . .

LOL... I didn't eat "breakfast" this morning in hopes of saving my calories for later. However, I will disclose that I "snacked" on a bowl of noodles and one of the kid's uneaten hot dogs. (It's not really a meal if I didn't sit right?)

In seriousness, I think you should enjoy the holiday foods (in moderation people!) and work on better eating later. After all, being around your favorite people, eating good food, and ENJOYING it, makes life great.

I'd agree with you, Lora, but substitute "vacation" for "holiday" and that's exactly how I got into this predicament.

Ann, I really wanted to participate in this thread but I ate everything that wasn't nailed down. Would have gotten off a little lighter but my son insisted it wasn't a complete meal without sweet potatoes, so we walked to the Asian neighborhood nearby where grocery stores were open, and bought them...used an old Parenting Magazine cookbook (fresh ginger, pecans, maple syrup). Quite delicious. I think I will be not not eating all weekend.

That reminds me, I forgot the shrimp coctail.

Breakfast I guess. A bit late now, unless I want to dream of trawls all night :P

Oh Ann,

Does this mean that you DID eat the pumpkin pie, the cherry pie and the chocolate cream pie.

But just not the apple pie.

I am happy to report that the three cats still are breathing and have all four legs.

LoraMa...I skipped breakfast too - decided the workout in the morning would help a bit, then took the appetizers planned off the menu. I love appetizers and knew I'd fill up on them because I had skipped breakfast.

I guess eating the 2,000 calorie Thanksgiving meal at lunch time was the reason we skipped dinner :o). So I didn't eat dinner, appetizers or breakfast.
