2007: Golden or Cursed Pig Year?

Many believe 2007 is a "golden pig" year which comes around once every 60 years. South Koreans have taken this belief to the next level, saying that 2007 may be the luckiest pig year in roughly 600 years.

Three months in, and my American inner circle has gone so far to say that 2007 is cursed. Now, I am not sure if this is just life, and the more people you meet, the higher the chance for bad to ensue, but so far 2007 has not quite delivered anything golden.

From simple things like colds and illness running rampant, to horrible news of siblings with brain tumors. My best friend found the top half of her beloved Yorkie in her backyard early one morning, after being viciously torn in half by a coyote roughly a month ago. Another dear friend's mother was diagnosed with a very severe case of pancreatic cancer and given six months to live. That same friend's fiancee lost two fingers in a construction accident days after the cancer news, and a friend I met overseas lost his battle with drug addiction.

We still have 3/4 of the year to turn this bad streak into good, and maybe every year starts off bad in comparison to the high hopes we all have for the new year ahead of us and we just forget? WIll this lucky year of the pig take all of this badness and turn it into good? Or will tragedies keep striking left and right? The friend who lost her dog has since gotten another, whom she loves dearly. The brain tumor was benign, the friend's mother's cancer is shrinking thanks to Chemo and maybe her fiancee's fingers will teach him to appreciate and use other aspects of his body and mind in his work.

How is your year of the pig treating you? Golden or slightly off color?

Your circle's 2007 (so far) sounds like 2006 for mine. Many of my friends had a really rough time in 2006, and I lost two close friends, one only 30 and the other only 24. While not totally great, so far 2007 has proven to be much better for us. And it sounds like it's improving for you too - I hope the positive trend continues.

My year has been polishing up to a shiny golden sheen. I am not someone who give much thought to luck, but am grateful to what seems to be an upward trend in career opportunity, spiritual balance and family health. So, I give a "thumbs up" to the year of the pig, but then I always did like bacon.
