Things I'm Proud of

Perhaps this thread has been started before, but it’s not active at the moment, and I think it’s healthy – and sometimes even necessary – every now and then to acknowledge your own accomplishments in life. What are you most proud of?

My list is short, but definitely meaningful to me:

1. My children: They’re their own people, and so much of what they’re accomplishing in life is driven by them, not me. And the phenomenal sweetness of their souls was OBVIOUSLY part of their very nature from birth . . . so I don’t know that I can really take much credit for that, either . . . but I’m sure proud to call them my boys. What amazing young men they are!

2. My college degree: My family had to struggle a LOT (financially) to get me through college. I’m very proud of the fact that I honored their sacrifice by completing my degree.

3. My Black belt: Not the belt, necessarily. But the fact that I didn’t give up. In our schools it typically takes around 2 years (if you go straight through and stay on track) to get from White to Black. However, do to injuries, two difficult pregnancies (and even more difficult recoveries), a battle with severe, debilitating depression over the all too early and unexpected deaths of both of my parents and a host of other issues . . . it took me 15 years. I spent 10 years at my prep belt. But I went back when I realized that my boys would soon get to an age where they’d understand that I made it to within ONE belt and then quit. I did NOT want to send that message to my children. So I went back. I fought through the issues that aging 10 years presents. And after 8 months back, was awarded my first degree. Now I have the drive to continue on to the next level. I hope to someday make my boys as proud of me as I am of them. ;0)

Getting past the thought that I had two left feet and couldn't tango if my life depended on it. Or...me? a runner? in a race? Then doing pretty good in a race. Fitness convention with hours of cardio classes in a day? No way. Yes. Ok. I love this. Hike down and back up the Grand Canyon..you've got to be kidding. Wait, this is fun.

For me it's all the things I've been doing after 40 that I never ever thought I'd do.

There is a lot I've accomplished in my 53 years. Some good, some bad.

I prefer to be grateful for the opportunities I've had in my life. For me, pride comes from the fact I have always tried my best in whatever I have endeavored regardless of the outcome.

Only 15 years? I started in 1966. I made Black Belt in the late 80's. Currently 8th Black (Professor Status). I did full contact for a while, blocked a kick with my face (not a good idea), had "blowout eye socket surgery".

"I" struggled for my degrees. And, (according to my EX ), I suck as a Dad! But, hey, I'm still here plugging!

Trying your best IS something to be proud of. I struggled with that growing up - I used to give up SO easily. I really respect people who give everything they have to everything they do. That's a trait I'm trying to instill in my children.

I wonder how many of us participate in martial arts. Do you still participate?

The fact that you're still in there plugging away is something to be proud of. But my guess is that your ex is wrong.

Well, I sure would not boast about everything I've done in life, but since you ask, I have to share this short essay my 10 year old adopted son (all 3 of our kids are adopted through the US child welfare system) brought home from school yesterday (V's writing skills aren't the best - we're working on that):

"My dad is special to me because he takes me places. He also get cool stuff for me. He also takes me on cool trips like going camping in the Virgina Mountains. That was really really awesome. We also go fishing in the summer a lot. I think my dad is really really graat."

So I guess as a dad I must be doing something right.

You are an inspiration to me. You've got me looking forward to these 40's that I've now hit. I can't wait to see what things I do in my 40s that I never thought I'd do.
