Are you thinking about taking the plunge and going out on your own? Personally, it's one of the best choices I have made in my life. I left corporate America eleven years ago (after 25 years of servitude), and have never looked back.

To that end, here's a list of some of the fastest-growing jobs for self-employed Boomers, according to 225 Best Jobs for Baby Boomers, from JIST Works:

Personal Financial Advisors

Management Analysts

Private Detectives/Investigators

Tax Preparers

Appraisers, Real Estate

Painters and Illustrators

Copy Writers

Multi-media Artists

Assessors

Product Promoters

Hi, Gordon -

This is interesting. I'm not currently looking for work myself, but I'm struck by "Private Detectives" - what kind of experience does someone need to launch a freelance private detective career?!

Research librarian?

Shapeshifter?

An class B office on the second floor overlooking a city street with a neon sign flickering outside the window.......

Seriously, there are books and on-line programs you can take. Someone told me there are adult education classes in some cities on the topic.

Interesting. It struck me just the other day that 'personal financial advisor' would be a good field to get into - after the first five advisors I called told me they didn't want me as a client - my portfolio wasn't big enough and/or they didn't do hourly consulting.

Surely I'm not the only boomer with a - what are the words they use in real estate?.. 'charming' or 'cute' - portfolio and a need for hourly, fee-only financial consultation?! I sense a supply/demand imbalance in this field...

Greetings Gordon,

Private investigator sounds intriguing. Is it the third highest ranking profession in the JIST Works order of jobs? It's third on your listing...

Best,

BDD
