What do you want to do before you kick the bucket?

I'm always interested in what other people want to accomplish during the new year - or what they would like to think they can accomplish.

I make resolutions every year - and it seems they are the same one.

But since I'm now OVER half a century old (51 to be exact), I figure I should come up with some new ones - I'm not going to lose weight (been there/done that), I'm not going to go by a budget (been there/still broke), Now I figure it's more important to live my life, rather than try to control it. What brought this soul-searching on? I saw a preview for a movie with Jack Nicholson - The Bucket List. It's stuff you want to do before you 'kick the bucket".

So I will start -- my now ten that I want to accomplish before I KICK THE BUCKET!!

1. Go to Europe - I want to see London, Paris, Athens, Rome and Ireand.

2. I want to be happy - I see people who have this 'happiness' around them. I want that - I don't want to have fleeting moments of it, I want it all the time. I don't want to think about the son who died (whose birthday is today), I don't want to think about the things I missed out on.

3. I want to drive across the United States from one coast to the other and then from north to south. I want to be sure I have seen every state that we have. I have particulars in each state that interest me - so I plan on making a list and seeing if I can do them all.

4. I want to finish school - I feel like I've been in college on/off for most of my adult life. Things kept getting in the way - marriage, kids, work, me. But now I would like to actually finish one degree. I'm working on Psychology and only have about 10 classes left - wishe me luck.

5. I would like to learn to cook really cool food - like creme brule, russian food, french food, greek food, .... ok, all kinds of food. Right now our evening meals consist of spaghetti, tacos, sloppy joes, roast, meat loaf, chicken an pork chops - every week - ssdd. i want to learn to cook something that takes more than opening a can and putting it in the microwave.

6. I want to learn about different spirtual directions I could take - is Christianity the way to go, what about Buddism, what about Kabalah, what about Scientology (Tom and John can't be all wrong). what other spiritual directions are there (notice I didn't say religions, I said spiritual).

7. I want to find an exercise program that I can stick with because I enjoy it. My friend found running and loves it, not for me. I thought about Yoga (anybody???), what about walking groups (anybody???), maybe I should be the 'old lady' body builder???

8. I want to be totally, completely, madly in love again. Yes I'm married and I still 'love' my husband - very much. But after 24 years, it 's more comfortable than passionate. How do you get the passion back???

9. I want to see my kids happy - I want them married with kids of their own and know that they are happy with their choices.

10. I want to be in a position to die knowing I've accomplished all I could in this life... that I didn't miss anything or have any regrets.

An added one - I want to skydive (because Jack did it in the movie and it looked like fun).

These seem like good and attainable goals. I've accomplished some of these and I was a late starter, so you can too.

After age 40; I had accomplished 1,3,4,5 & 7. I think that happiness is overrated so I'm no longer persuing that rainbow. I think Tom and John CAN be all wrong but I don't think all religions other than my own can be totally off track. I still seek 9 and missed my opportunity to skydive.

Get-er-done!

Thanks - now I know there is still hope for me. Of course, I've always been one to start things late - like school. Started back in when I was 46.

But I figure as long as I'm kicking, I can still do something constructive with my life. Besides, they say the way to stay healthy of mind is to keep your mind moving -- which is what I intend to do.

Thanks

I'm doing it now--travel, trying to learn a little of a different language, doing some consulting, volunteering as a "Big Sister". I want to be 85 and look back on my life and be pretty satisfied, not regretful.

P.S. London and Paris are awesome. We were in Italy this year and it was terrific. Have made it to 35 of the 50 states so far and we are trying to hit all of the Canadian Provinces. So much to see, so little time!

Your llist is wonderful - May I make one suggestion/ovservation. GIve up on #10. If you really do 1-9, you'll have to fail at #10. If your'e really living and trying new things, some of them won't work out and you will have regrets. Go for 1-9 and let #10 take care of itself.

Hope some of your wishes come truie in '08.

There are many things I'd like to do. I'll be satisfied if I can manage this:

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- WOW-- What a Ride!" motorcycle racer Bill McKenna

My problem is the old adage, "Wherever you go...there you are". Everytime I try to branch out in a new direction. I meet myself there. That person who gives up too easily or needs to go to bed before 9. I think happiness is internal. I think the Buddhist way is that the only way to be happy is to stop wanting. Will anything ever be enough? No. Be happy where you are. If you don't want anything then all of a sudden you have everything you need.
