The World's Gone Mad

Just in case you needed more evidence (which most of us didn't), the assassination this morning of Benazir Bhuto proves that the world has gone mad. I admit I don't know as much as I should about Pakistani politics, but killing the opposition leader and 14 other people can't be the answer to any situation. I am grieved by this senseless loss.

True, and there seem to be idiots in every country and they have guns or bombs or other ways of killing people.

I'd like to think that 2008 would be a more peaceful year in this world. I will still hope for that and pray for that. But even for an optimist it is getting hard to stay that way.

No, I definitely didn't need more evidence. I share in your grief. This is a sad occurence and will only result in more killing. Violence has never been the answer, and it never will be, for any situation. That's why people like Martin Luther King and Ghandi are so enlightening, refreshing, and effective. Let's hope someone with that type of vision and approach can emerge in Pakistan

I'm impressed that you've made it this long as an optimist. It is so hard to maintain faith in this human enterprise when I hear about such horrid things.

We should never forget our fear in the days after 911. You didn't know what was next. Didn't think something like that was possible and there it was. We can't comprehend such zeal but we can hold each other up and try to show our own determination to find a more peaceful solution.

Gaaaaaaaah. I had no idea. I appreciate the heads up. Yes, the world has long been mad. I have an 18-year-old daughter who's enthralled with politics and woman-power and the potential of one person to change the world. We'll have to discuss this thoroughly and, in preparation, I did some reading this morning because I admit I did not know much about this woman and her situation. Bhutto was a complicated person who made many enemies in a very unstable part of the world. I want my daughter to grieve for more than the fact that the world lost a female leader.

As an optimist I am hanging on by a thread

I think the world has always been a little mad only now it seems more so

Maybe it's partly due to the efficient ways we have come up with killing each other

Or maybe it's due to the lack of really great leadership worldwide

But I would like to think that the "regular" people in this world are pretty decent

And if every optimist gave up hope then the world would really be a hopeless place.
