What kind of world do you want? Autism speaks

Last year I volunteered in a preschool class for developmentally disabled kids. I worked with several children who were autistic and non verbal. We were teaching them how to communicate with a system using pictures. It was a challenge (a couple of them got very frustrated and acted up when they could not make their wants understood) but we made progress. I've worked with autistic children before but not non verbal little ones. It was very rewarding for me.

I know I've mentioned that my mom was a special education teacher, but I also have a cousin who has a daughter with cerebal palsy and autism, I haven't seen her in a very long time, but last time I did she only had a few words, in sign language, she does not speak at all,.

Very moving. I believe they've already surpassed the goal. I also noted that one of the other charities promoted on the site is Augie's Quest -- I have posted here about Augie Nieto's Quest to find the cause of ALS. So while you are there, please watch their video too.

Autism has not personally touched my life. My daughter was a preemie & only weighed 2.3 lb. The term was growth retardation but her head was spared. She was developmentally monitered for years, with insurance covering it all. It's disturbing to watch the video & realize insurance companies are not covering whatever is needed to help families with autistic children.
