St.Valentine's: Alone? Celebrate Friends, Family and Self!

Geez, I've been happily married for almost three decades, but we have LOTS of single friends and family, and they are TIRED of all of the media/advertising hoopla for Valentine's Day! It's just ONE freakin' day in the year!

If YOU are currently single, and/or alone, and a lot of the hype gets to 'ya, try celebrating your friends, family, and, most importantly, YOURSELF!

Send a funny snail- mail, or e-mail card, to friends/family, or a shut-in, senior citizen, or a member of our armed services. Additionally, rent a funny movie, or watch a silly TV show, buy yourself some favorite chocolates, or flowers, treats, read a joke book, indulge in sweet cologne, bubble bath, etc.

CELEBRATE the fact that YOU'VE made it THIS FAR! Also, cherish and remember any fond memories of past good times.

You clearly are well enough to be reading this, so, stay strong, focus on your inner reservoir of self-worth, and let YOUR light shine, the one that is inside each and every one of us!

Valentine's Day; OMG, is it almost here?

I haven't noticed much about it this year. Don't know if that means I'm able to shut it out or there really isn't much yet.

General rule for me is I don't even notice it unless I've got someone special in my life and then it's about her.

Thanks, Fromz! I do agree, that WHEN we have a special someone, it's important to focus on them! There is a whole 'nother discussion on tbd titled," Valentine's Day Is Coming-Any Ideas?", where lots of us have posted ideas, and some of the things that we do, or should do, for the loves in our lives!

These thoughtful, loving ideas should be practiced, not just on St. Valentine's, but at other times, as well!

Where I'm at, it was barely Christmas and not even New year's when the Christmas candy was leaving the shelves and the St. Valentine's Day candy began filling the shelves.

New Year's had barely passed when St. Patrick's Day candy and such what nots began to fill the shelves next to the St. Valentine's stuff.

I swear I've never seen things change shelves as fast as it does here in NJ.

Rhiannnonn- I know what you mean, lots of stores already had their Christmas/Holiday seasonal things out, before Halloween! There's such an over-the-top, absurd earliness to all of the holidays!

On a brighter note, if you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc., why not also make Valentine's a fun time for them? When our children were younger, we would let them choose only pink and/or red foods for Valentine's, to see if they could come up with a somewhat healthy, varied, and fun meal! They enjoyed helping prepare: tomato-based spaghetti, or other pasta, with tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes, fruit salad with red grapes, strawberries, and, of course, desserts with either cherries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, and/or red jello, not to mention red/pink heart cookies, or cakes. Often, they had fun decorating these with red/pink sprinkles, icing, little heart candies, dried fruits, like c'raisins, etc.!

Also, most large-box stores, craft departments, etc., have red, pink, and colorful construction paper, lace doilies, gliitter, etc., where children can choose simple art materials, to create fun Valentines for special people: family members, friends, teachers, shut-ins, hospital patients, and/or nursing home residents!

Unfortuneately, I only have access to one out of five of my grandchildren and she's too young for you wonderful suggestions. But I will make note of them so that when she's a couple of years older we can do them with her. Thanks very much!!

I like your message and rememberance of the forgotten ones...military, elderly, shut-ins, etc.

I've never been in love, dating, etc. So I've always looked at this day like I do the Super Bowl...its for those people. VD is for lovers, including husband and wives (haha) and children. And the Super Bowl is for football fans.

I don't fit in any of those catagories, so they are just another day.

Surprisingly as an adult I have received VD cards and they made me happy, but I don't see it as a friends day.

Good Lord Lady!! Did you have me freaking out!!! LOL!!! I'm reading your post and it says "VD cards..."

My mind goes "VD cards"??? Who on God's green earth would send a card for having VD??? Husbands and wives and children??? It threw me out into left field. Way out into left field. I had to reread the paragraph three times...

Then it snuck up behind me and hit me over the head with a telephone pole --- Valentine's Day (ya big dumby). Shorthand! Duh!

Hope y'all get as much of a laugh out of my mistake as I did. LOL!!! (And if you don't, then excuse me and please blame it on my meds.)
