"RESPECT YOURSELF: THE STAX RECORDS STORY" COMING TO PBS AUGUST 1ST

Between 1959 and 1975, Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee released international chart-topping hits such as "Soul Man," "Dock of the Bay," "Green Onions," "Midnight Hour," "Respect Yourself," and the theme from SHAFT. The label's artists included Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Booker T. & the MGs, Wilson Pickett, Isaac Hayes, and even Richard Pryor and Jesse Jackson.

Founded by a white conservative bank teller who played country fiddle music, Stax became the preeminent soul music label in America, and became identified with the civil rights movement of the 1960s and '70s. RESPECT YOURSELF documents the Stax label, its visionaries, and most of all, its music.

The program premieres on August 1, 2007 (check local listings)

I can't wait to see this show! Stax was an extremely influential label, and its story is fascinating. I have the box set of the Stax singles, and the booklet that comes with it sheds a lot of light on the Stax story. Being able to see it come to life will be an added treat. Thanks for this notice!

There is an excellent article in this week's Rolling Stone's 40th Summer of Love issue about Stax and how the record company was a highly creative island of diversity in the great sea of segregation that engulfed Memphis and most of the rest of the South. Great background for the PBS special.

STAX was a great record label.

It's truly exciting for me to see how it's being currently revitalized.

Who are some of your favorite STAX artists?

Great music came out of that label. I have a special appreciation for Johnnie Taylor's 'Who's making love' and 'Cheaper to keep her', and Shirley Brown's 'Woman to woman.' Thanks for alerting me to the PBS special. I look forward to it!
