Horrible T.V. Show Concepts

Reality and/or scripted . . . what are some of the worst?

Personally, I have NEVER been able to grasp the appeal of ‘The Bachelor’. I simply can not understand group dating some guy in hopes that he’ll ultimately choose me for . . . what? How many of these couples are actually still together . . . what is the point? I know that for the people on the show there is the whole ’15 minutes of fame’ aspect. But this would NOT be the 15 minutes of fame that I would want.

Worse yet, was “Average Joe” – concept: Take very nice, average (albeit leaning toward the geeky) guys, and parade them in front of a stunning, shallow (but, bless her heart, trying so hard NOT to be), bimbo knowing full well that half way through the season you’ll toss in a handful of hunky male models that are as shallow as the starlet . . . really . . . did they HONESTLY believe she’d ride off into the sunset with the “Average Joe” . . . ? NO . . . they knew she wouldn’t. So these great guys were tormented for the sake of entertainment. Unacceptable in my opinion. My guess is that the concept was devised by a bunch of arrogant former football jocks looking for yet another chance to pick on the school nerd.

The show that currently has me completely repulsed is “Moment of Truth”. I can sort of see where someone would find the concept amusing . . . but they have taken it WAY overboard. I have never watched an episode (and refuse to), but the trailers that they’re showing for the next episode just make me sick. They have this woman’s ex-boyfriend come out and ask ‘If I said I wanted you back, would you leave your husband?’ . . . and she said YES. IF this couple stays together after that little revelation, it will take much therapy for their marriage to survive.

Within the scripted world . . . WHY would you bring back Knightrider? Or American Gladiators? Wasn’t there a pretty good reason these shows went off the air in the first place. To me this is much like the ridiculous attempt only a few years back to revive Love Boat (confession: I loved the original Love Boat. I’ve seen every episode. I’m such a dork!)

So what are some of your favorite shows/concepts to hate and why?

Oh ordinarygirl... THANK YOU. I feel exactly the same about shows like "The Bachelor" (you know something has got to be wrong with a person who purposely goes on a show with 25 other women to snag a man... what decade are these people from?) And "Moment of Truth"... I won't watch it either, but the trailers just crack me up. You know the person editing those are just having a grand ole time.

I'll have to debate you on the virtues of American Gladiator though... any show that features people named Hellga, Mayhem, Justice, Titan and Wolf... that's some good television.

That caveman show based on the commercials was rather puzzling. I hope it's still not on.

Don't watch any of the reality based shows or the multitude of game shows. I admit to tuning in to watch Celebrity Apprentice only because of Trace Adkins. Saw him in concert a few times since a good friend of mine is obsessed with him. Watched a live interview with him before the concert about his book. He was sitting right there in front of me. Heck of a nice guy with very interesting opinions. I can see the appeal in him. He also discussed the filming of Apprentice which was kind of cool. I tend to tune it out while it's on but I'm supporting Trace who has proven himself on that show. Let me tell you...that one can fill a pair of tight jeans like no one else!

Just about every "Reality Show" is on my most hated list. I have enough drama in my own life. I don't need to see how miserable or weird other people can be.

I also dislike shows that follow the lives of movie stars and other celebrities. Aside from morbid curiosity; who is sleeping with whom, who is having whose illegitimate child, who is ending a week old marriage, who wore white after Labor Day, and whose under garments (or lack of) is being caught on film has no impact on my life. With all the real problems and news in the world it's amazing to me where we often place our priorities...myself included.

I agree that there is a surge of rehashed shows, music, and movies. Have so many people in the entertainment industry run out of original ideas that they need to resort to the success of predecessors?

Ok, I feel better now. Thanks for the chance to vent Ordinarygirl. And BTW, I have read and enjoyed many of your postings. You are far above ordinary.

It does, indeed, feel good to vent every now and then, doesn't it?

And thanks for the sweet comment!

My husband recently told me about a reality show involving graveyards and I said, "Stop, I don't want to know anymore!". There are too many odd and completely pointless programs coming soon, to a tv near you...most times I'd like to toss the tv out the window and declare, "I'm mad as (heck) and I'm not going to take the channel surfing anymore!" ...
