Who mows your lawn?

Today I'm off to buy a new lawnmower.

I have a son, a very able bodied 17 year-old rock star (wannabe) who is in perfect health. He goes out of his way to make time for weight lifting and other fitness routines.

Yet getting him to mow the lawn is an endeavor that one should not attempt without benefit of whip and chair. The lawnmower has sat in one forlorn spot under the eave since last fall. We are now having lovely Spring like weather that very soon will unfold into the muggy miserable days of summer. Yet the lawnmower remains motionless.

It is busted.

I have a little manual two-wheeler that I take out and run around the easy spots when the mailman insists upon getting onto the property. My son will not touch it.

My neighbors' yards are beautiful. They either have children that were raised better or they hire a truckload of people once a week (every week) to take care of it for them.

My best friend lives in an apartment with absolutely no lawn upkeep other than her her little desktop zen garden which she prefers to rake herself.

One of my neighbors has a small yard, but he is elderly (yes...our age) and has a little riding mower. Big man...little scooter mower...it looks funny, but his yard is perfect.

Today is the day that my son has agreed to accompany me to the hardware store for the new purchase. It has already been determined that we are not going to follow our neighbor's example. We will buy a mid-priced motorized, gas powered, push mower.

I think this says a lot about me.

How do you keep up with the grass?

Lawn service. I got 8 acres, half woods, half lawn with my house in the middle of the lawn. They get it all done in about an hour.

When I was a kid I was the one who used to ride the lawn mower. The novelty of that ride wore of pretty quickly.

I need to downsize. Maybe in a few years.

Stop watering, stop mowing. Dig down 6 to 8 inches, fill with decomposed granite, a couple of big boulders, a few drought resistant plants of your choice. Install a drip system with timer.

This is not as expensive as it might sound, especially if you hire some industrious college age kids. Feed them and give them beer ( Hold the beer till they are finished)

Mr Black and Mr Decker do most of my front with a little help from Tecumseh in the places they don't fit. The bits still left, go to the children of Messrs Black and Decker who beat them to death with plastic string. All this is under my supervision.

The larger back belongs entirely to the Senior B&D because, when we go riding out 3 or 4 times a year, they are so good at taking out saplings.

Portions of the yard need a visit from Mr Caterpillar but that has to wait for a drought because they are often under water.

No chance I'm downsizing. It's way too nice not seeing even the neighbor's houses let alone them.

I use an electric mower to cut my grass. Small yard, tricky to not run over the cord, but it works well.

Me, me and me. We are on a farm and their are three yards that have to be mowed as well as an occasional run through the barnyard where equipment is parked. One yard my son and his wife take care of, the other two I am responsible for. For the most part, I enjoy doing yard work. I hate being cooped up indoors and would rather be outside working in my yard than inside cleaning up after other people (or myself!) There is something about the look of a freshly manicured yard and neat, tidy flower beds that I love!

Then there is my vegetable garden.....but we'll save that for another post! Gardening season is fast approaching.

Ms Farquar

Mowing, yard care is one thing I enjoy. Love my lawn looking like a golf fairway.
