White knucklers

Alfred Hitchcock was the king of suspense and I'd have to give him the award for all time best creepy "I can't look...but I gotta look" suspense scenes. But there have been plenty of scenes, other than those in horror films, that have put me on the edge of my seat.

I think the scene that affected me me most strongly in this manner (outside of a horror movie) was the scene in "Scent of a Woman" when Al Pacino is driving blind through the streets of New York.

That one had me watching from the hall and peeking around the door frame with one hand, fingers spread, over my eyes. I hadn't done that since the wicked witch of the west appeared in the Wizard of Oz!

Anyone else have some favorite "White Knuckle" scenes?

That chase scene in "Matrix Reloaded" was pretty good too.

the Shining.

I went to see it while in college with some friends that had seen it before.

The scene where Jack Nicolson jumps out from behind the pillar and buries an axe into Scatman Cruthers - as he did this, my so called friend (6' 3" 250lb) that was seated behind me reaches over and rips me out of my seat.

Not white knuckles exactly but the way these things should be done:

Don't know what the movie was, saw it when the earth was young at the drive in and once may years later on TV.

Guy's woman is leaving him on a bus. He's driving along next to it looking up at her and yelling something like "I love you." Camera cuts to the front and there's a huge truck right there. Both times, I stomped the brake pedal - and the second time I was in the living room on the couch.

The other is when the cleaver first comes down in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.

There's a scene in Marathon Man where I always stomp the brake too.
