How bad was your musical taste?

Many, many years ago when I was a child, every house had a 'hi-fi'. The little kids often weren't allowed to mess with these expensive devices, but if you were lucky, your parents bought you one of those little boxy suitcase record players so that you could play your little 45 rpms. (Of course, we never played them at the right speed, it was so much more fun to put the setting down on 16 or all the way up to 78).

Those who were lucky enough to get an allowance (fifty cents a week for me) eventually saved enough to buy a real album for themselves. It was such a cheap thrill to know that after all that scrimping, you had amassed the required $ 3.50 to make that huge purchase.

The first album that I spent my savings on...God Bless Tiny Tim.

I'm so glad you can't see me hanging my head in shame.

What was the first album you bought with your own money?

Can't remember the album name, but the singer was Roy Orbison. The only reason I bought it was to listen to the track "Crying" which I played over and over again, each day, forever. I had an early teenage crush on a 14 year old beauty, the song somehow fitted my love-sick forlorn mood.

In those days the needles on the record player wore out quickly, and my parents got very sick of replacing them, as well as hearing this song repeated incessantly.

Yes, I was, but at eight years old, most of the humor was beyond me. I think I remember having a little crush on Henry Gibson.
