Is the Boss Lying?

Someone asked me the other day for advice on how they could tell if their boss was telling the truth. Seems like the boss often times says one thing then ends up doing another.

That question brought up all sorts of memories for me of when that very thing happened on occasion. I can remember one time when the boss guaranteed me that I would be provided a new assistant to replace the one I had before they resigned. Not only was I not able to hire a replacement, but I ended up sharing an assistant with two others.

When I asked the boss what was going on, he said that it was a new company policy. Right--like I'm buying that. So he only just found out?

So how can you tell if the boss is telling the truth? Some people believe that if you pay attention to their body language you'll have a pretty good idea.

How about you? Catch your boss telling you one thing and doing something else? Any thoughts on how you can tell if they are being honest?

Sad but true...if my current department head says anything to me, I can count on at least one lie in her words. I don't take what she says with a grain of salt, I take it with the whole shaker. Fortunately, most bosses I've had are not like her!

I have been in corporate America for a few large companies...can't do it...not for me. I was management in the engineering department for a major aerospace manufacturer, and in management for the production department for a major aluminum company. Seems to me, the professional management types I have run into, have sold their souls to the companies...as if they owe the very air they breathe to the companies. I learned never to trust anything they had to say...and never turn the proverbial back on them...they'd stab you in the back in a heart beat if it would get them ahead. So...catch my bosses in a lie...all the time...every time they opened their mouths!

I left those jobs because, for better or for worse, I am the type of person who doesn't change hats...and cannot bring myself to be a yes man or kiss ass...and it seems, in the companies I worked for at least, you had to, to climb their ladders. To my delight, I have found there's not much of that in the airlines...other things to contend with, but those annoyances are gone...that makes me happy. And when it comes to evaluations, the airlines have to judge us on performance, not who our friends are and the circles we hang in...that's cool!
