Step forward to list movies with Irish elements, There are some splendid ones, old and new. "The Quiet Man" comes to mind, Then there's my favorite: "The Secret of Roan Inish" If you can watch it dry-eyed, well, ye've got no heart a'tall.

What are your favorites, and why?

As the Clancy Brothers sang

"Maybe someday I'll be goin' back to Ireland

If my dear old wife would only pass away!

She's nearly got my heart broke with her naggin'

Well, you get the idea.

I'd wish you the luck of the Irish but I know too much history to do such a thing to you.

The Secret of Roan Inish is my favorite, too

There's a band called "Patrick Street" that you'll be wantin' to hear. Oh, they're fine. I did hear them play a couple of months ago at a local pub. Wonderful, it was.

They've got them CDs so you'll not be needin' to go galavantin' round to hear em' although that's the best way I'll be thinkin'.

A favorite of mine is a 1984 film by Pat O'Connor called, "Cal," with John Lynch, Donal McCann and Helen Mirren. Cal (Lynch) is 19, Catholic and unemployed with little hope for the future. His Ma is dead, his Da works in the slaughterhouse.

Cal breaks your heart as he's reluctantly drawn into the IRA and ultimately involved in the murder of a Protestant policeman. Mirren plays the widow who, through a series of events, becomes involved with Cal, unaware of his crime.

The hopelessness and violence of 1980s Belfast as filtered through the very human lens of a boy caught in the middle of the maelstrom. A small, eloquent, powerful film, Irish to its core.

Cal is indeed an excellent production.

I never saw the Movie of "Angela's Ashes" but the book was terrific.

I'm going to Ireland for a whole week in a couple of months.

I loved The Secret of Roan Inish. In fact, I wanted to name my eldest son Roan after the movie. "Roan Murphy . . . " just sounded perfect. I was outvoted by the rest of the family. Good thing, though. He doesn't look much like a seal. ;0)

Britscot,

Ireland is one of my favorite places i've visited.

Make sure to get off the beaten path if you can!

We went on a horseback riding trip going inn to inn.

I rented a car and spent the days off the horse ;-)exploring all the small out of way towns and local crafts people!
