CATASTROPHIC predictions of global warming usually conjure with the notion of a tipping point, a point of no return.

Last Monday - on ABC Radio National, of all places - there was a tipping point of a different kind in the debate on climate change. It was a remarkable interview involving the co-host of Counterpoint, Michael Duffy and Jennifer Marohasy, a biologist and senior fellow of Melbourne-based think tank the Institute of Public Affairs. Anyone in public life who takes a position on the greenhouse gas hypothesis will ignore it at their peril.

Duffy asked Marohasy: "Is the Earth stillwarming?"

She replied: "No, actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is certainly not what you'd expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years."

Duffy: "Is this a matter of any controversy?"

Marohasy: "Actually, no. The head of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has actually acknowledged it. He talks about the apparent plateau in temperatures so far this century. So he recognises that in this century, over the past eight years, temperatures have plateaued ... This is not what you'd expect, as I said, because if carbon dioxide is driving temperature then you'd expect that, given carbon dioxide levels have been continuing to increase, temperatures should be going up ... So (it's) very unexpected, not something that's being discussed. It should be being discussed, though, because it's very significant."

CATAST...

With all the pharmaceuticals in the water we'll all be too stoned to care anyway!! Or maybe there really are not pharmaceuticals in the water....... Isn't it great when the media feeds our own biases! Don't you love it? News Flash in the year 2525, if man is still alive, if woman can survive, they may find....... hopefully a pristine world. Mother earth is precious and to me protecting her matters regardless of predictions. I have had to come to the painful realization over the years that much of mankind does not share my love of the wilderness and the pristine world. It only makes me appreciate more those rare individuals who value her as I do.

Did I miss something in the article? Did I say something in invisible type?

I can't see anyplace anyone has suggested not trying to be good stewards. Only that the panic algore and the warming morons have been pushing has met another problem - it ain't happening.

Fromz I am glad to hear your steward of the earth comment although I must say I guestion the sincerity of it given the name calling. I would be one of those morons and proud of it!! Love that wilderness and will always do what I can to keep it the same. Statistics change but your view probably will not ever. Course we know that the warming trend goes much further back than the past 10 years and it does fluxuate. I know it is scarey to deal with our destruction of this beautiful planet especially when it is the United States that leads the gluttonous pack. Course China is catching up if they have not already bypassed us. They also smoke cigarettes more!

Warming goes back to the beginning of the end of the last ice age.

It was briefly interrupted by the Little Ice Age which ended in something like 1850. Since then we have been warming naturally as we contniue into the current interglacial period.

I've always thought Al Gore was full of shit. And those Nobel Peace Prize putz's - what a buncha ignorant idiots. Glad there are folks like you and Jennifer to set us all straight.

Any yahoo can find some scientist to support their position. The good news is most Americans rely on the Bible to predict the future. So, who knows if the warriors of Armageddon will be wearing furs or thongs? Meanwhile, hey, let's fire up the jet skis and have some fun, eh?

"Dr Jennifer Marohasy is the Director of the Environment Unit at right-wing Australian think tank the Institute of Public Affairs. She is a climate change skeptic, denying that climate change is caused by greenhouse gas emissions.

According to her biographical note she grew up on a cattle station in the Northern Territory then attended school in Brisbane. "After completing a science degree at the University of Queensland she worked for many years as a field biologist in remote parts of Africa and Madagascar. During the 1990s Jennifer published in international and Australian scientific journals. In 1998 she was invited by the United States Department of Agriculture to give the keynote address at the annual general meeting of biological control scientists in Hawaii," it states. [1]

"In 1997, Jennifer started with the Queensland Canegrowers Organisation as Environment Manager. During this time she developed an interest in environmental campaigns and in particular anomalies between fact and perception regarding the health of the Great Barrier Reef," it states."

I think the point Tweedledum is making is that your link is of little value as the scientist you quote isn't reputable .

Thank you Tweedle .

I hate the climate debate . The Earth is finite . We can't abuse it's resources forever. I say let the scientist debate the details ,reducing our ecological impact is important .
