What Was Your First LP?

The first LP that one bought usually carries a lot of emotional and nostalgic baggage. The circumstances of the first purchase resonates with a whole gestalt of our life and times.

My childhood was filled with music, principally from my father who was a classical music fanatic. When my sister and I were very young, he'd play a game with us in the car by having us guess the name of a piece of music by playing only a few seconds on the radio. You had to be sharp to win that one.

In this TBD query you may choose to mention the first record ever bought for you or in conjuction with your parents, or the first you bought with your very own money. In the latter category, my first purchases completely without parental approval were Tim Buckley's "Hello and Goodbye," Kaleidoscope's "Beacon from Mars," and the Beatles' "The Beatles" (aka the "white album").

How about yours?

Groovy question (sorry, I was having a 60's moment).

I was totally into the British invasion. Starting with everything by the Beatles.....Meet the Beatles being my first. And the Stones early stuff.

I also grabbed Billy J Kramer & the Dakotas.

Remember them?

If it isn't already apparent it will be now that I am older than many of the posters on TBD. The first record I bought with my own money was a 45 rpm version of "That's Amore" by Dean Martin. The first album I remember was a present from a friend who is a now famous movie actress who thought I might like this "sexy unknown'. It was an Elvis album!

I'm a little younger than this group, but I grew up with similar experiences as Stephen. My father worked in a recording studio for a while and my parents had a ridiculous record collection. Some of which has been handed down to me. And let me remind you vinyl is heavy, heavy, heavy.

First album given to me, Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel (1980).

For me this album remains a top favorite, featuring performances from some of my favorite musicians. Paul Weller outstanding, Steve Lillywhite producing (U2 Fame).

First album I bought for myself, Minor Threat, Out of Step.

This album changed me, as much as Peter Gabriels did. I saw the world through a fresh and uncluttered set of eyes. I learned of my role as an individual in society. heady stuff for a teen.

Honorable mention as it was given to me at the same time as Peter Gabriels album, was Cheap Trick, Live at Budokan. Fun fun album. :-)

Yikes. I think it was a Peter & Gordon album, of all things - the one with 'Woman'. The rest of the songs on the album have been long since forgotten...mercifully. I remember my parents' reaction, "oh... I'm surprised you like that kind of music." They were more interested in the Beatles and Bob Dylan.

Later I remember buying a Quicksilver Messenger Service album (one that was already a bit dated) and on the same trip to the record store my Dad bought this weird thing called "Music from Big Pink".

It's not easy growing up with parents who are hipper than you :-(

Oh god, Betty. You've got brass to admit to that. But maybe I can make you feel better.

The first 45 I ever bought doesn't embarrass me, and was "I'm a Man" by the Spencer Davis Group (which I still have). But my first LP was the soundtrack to Porgy and Bess...and I still know every word to every song.
