What are the best sex scenes in regular, non-porn movies? Some of the ones on my list come from long ago, but it's amazing that I remember them, so I think they should get extra credit.

The best sex scenes were in Last Tango in Paris with Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider. Bernado Bertolucci, the director, made art not trashy love scenes like in Big Easy (Ellen Barkin).
The other ones worth mentioning was the beautifully made 9 1/2 Weeks. Kim Basinger in the art room was something else. Unfaithful's love scenes were excellent. The emotions of Diane Lane on the train were something of beauty. Both directed by Adrian Lyne by the way.
The Postman Always Rings Twice also had some great scenes especially Nicholson and Jessica Lange in the kitchen.
But no one did it better than Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider in Last Tango in Paris.
On of the trashiest sex scene was in Original Sin with Jolie and Antonio Banderas.

And even though I really am not a fan of Patrick Swayze or Demi Moore, I thought the pottery wheel scene in Ghost was kinda special.

'in the realm of the senses,' a japanese film from 1976 that seemed radical at the time of its release for its sexual realism.

I hadn't thought of the scene akabukowski describes from "Unfaithful" but it is beautifully erotic.
But... "9 1/2 Weeks", "Last Tango in Paris", "The Big Easy" and "The Postman Always Rings Twice" are right up there in the sexual erotica category. Give me a moment! I should be able to think of more to add. ;-o

The scene was at the beginning of the movie. It involved Uther and Igraine, who were literally creating the Arthur legend.
A note in passing about your photos: The gal in the middle picture is Helen Mirren, who played Arthur's half-sister Morgana. Amazing.
