As we enjoy our new friendships at TBD it's difficult to ignore the fact that this is truly a global community. We're interacting with different people of different cultures, outlooks and lifestyles. This is revealed through the language we use, the perspectives we hold and the many mentions of everyday life contrasts.
Such was the case in one recent thread in which the subject was steered towards food.
The food that I'm referring to is more specifically...Marmite.
I'd heard of Marmite, but had never had the inclination to purchase any myself. It is a fermented yeast product and this description alone was enough to convince me that such a thing might not be worth the adventure of trying.
Our dear friend Britscot, a long time Marmite fan from way back, not only suggested I get over my prudish, pruney ways and try it, but also strongly implied that if I found I could not develop a taste for it, our long term relationship of two weeks now, might be in jeopardy.
So I tried it.
I'm happy to announce to all you hopeful, single women of the TBD kingdom that Britscot is now available and free to seek out the Marmite loving woman of his dreams.
It was fun Britscot and we had some laughs, but having to devour that so-called delicacy is one cultural difference that is definitely irreconcilable.

Wow! look at you smiling and looking very un-pruney! Work it girl! You're adorable.
As for marmite....um....I'll take your word on that one. I think I'll pass.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 7:42pm
prunella
you are too cute with or without your hat!
i'm definitely passing too. thanks for being our trial balloon.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 1:51pm
Ah Well!
That leaves all the more for me.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 1:53pm
Is it like Vegemite, the stuff Men at Work sang about?
How do you feel about poi, the Hawaiian taro root paste?
Personally I prefer Mr. Barkey's - much tastier than Milk Bones.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 2:11pm
vegimite sandwich....yes....i knew it sounded familiar. it's from that song. Tweedle...you're a genius!
Posted: Mar 13, 08 4:43pm
I was thinking that the secret to your health and slim figure could be marmite, britscot? Or else all the fresh air from boating . . .
I do like nutella
and I love Cadbury chocolate--is it proper to mix chocolate with marmite?
Posted: Mar 13, 08 7:56pm
Me too! I've become quite fond of it and would enjoy it more often if it weren't for all the sodium in it.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 1:52pm
Forget the Marmite. You dear, look fabulous.
I will not be trying the marmite. You sold me on the last photo.
I think I will at some point try some Nutella.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 1:57pm
Nutella is the bomb!
Posted: Mar 13, 08 1:59pm
I've just realised what you have been doing wrong now that I have had a good look at the pics.
The butter goes on one side of the toast and the Marmite goes on the other. That way, it is one of those things that you can never put down.
It's worked for me for all my 65 years.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 2:08pm
But isn't she cute????
Posted: Mar 13, 08 2:16pm
I don't see any marmite
Posted: Mar 13, 08 2:25pm
Funny and Beautiful too........:)
Posted: Mar 13, 08 2:35pm
It could have been worse, Prunella,
It could have been haggis.... or Norwegian lutefisk... or icelandic shark...
Posted: Mar 13, 08 2:46pm
Or fugu or what people really eat in China......I bought my nephews some candy that looks like amber complete with edible bugs in it...
Posted: Mar 13, 08 7:44pm
oh no!!! toooooooooo nasty!
Posted: Mar 13, 08 8:59pm

Ms Farquar
I had the pleasure of visiting Archie McPhees before there was an internet and it has always been an amazing store.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 2:41pm
You Yanks have it all wrong when it comes to Vegemite (or Marmite), even in the above photographs. In Australia, Vegemite on toast for breakfast, or on cheese in kids school sandwiches, is a dietary staple. And, it's very tasty.
But, Americans seem determined to spread it exceedingly thickly, as though it's like peanut butter. That way it's inedible.
Vegemite (or Marmite) is spread very, very thinly. Hardly any at all is used.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 7:54pm
I noticed that also. Pru had the stuff slathered on like potted meat. Lightly Does It...
Posted: Mar 14, 08 5:49am
Tony, you and Johnny weren't here to instruct me!! In about 5 years, I'll try it again and do it right.
(How long does marmite keep?)

Posted: Mar 13, 08 8:01pm

Obscene froggie---but devine! And speaking of such--Wouldn't you like to take a bite out of the new and revitalized Ms.Prunella?
Posted: Mar 14, 08 5:50am
I think I'll put my hat back on now.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 3:05pm
Pru, you are lovely--where's your hat? I feel like Cinderella's ugly step sister next to you--of course, I am a turtle now
Posted: Mar 13, 08 3:34pm
I have to admit, I consider that my eyes have been enriched by these images of Ms Farquar.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 3:52pm
Did I really put too much marmite on the toast? It was the aftertaste that got to me.
I'll try it again in a year or two and put it on the other side of the bread.
Spuff, you're so cute for calling me cute!
And I do like Nutella.
The market was out of vegemite, but there's another place not far that I might try. To be honest, this intercultural food thing isn't working out so great.
Where can I get those amber bugs? They'd probably be an improvement.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 4:04pm
Homeport had them as part of thier fun things to put in Christmas stockings display.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 4:30pm
I'm sure my kids would be delighted to find those in their stockings!
Posted: Mar 13, 08 4:36pm
perhaps gummy mice, pru??? or gummy snakes??
Posted: Mar 13, 08 4:39pm
oh you moved it here. huh?
Prun~ exactly how much of that marmite did you eat?
Posted: Mar 13, 08 4:49pm
Spuff, I'm sorry. I put it in the wrong place and moved it just as your comment came through. I'll go back and change it, so that it'll all make sense. (At least to us.)
Posted: Mar 13, 08 4:50pm
it's ok. the last thing we want to be is sensible!
Posted: Mar 13, 08 4:56pm
OK The final word on Marmite has been laid at our door.
Friends of mine, who live in Yorkshire (think "All Creatures Great and Small") run a small business. Sadly for all you food freaks out there, they do not export, but I thought you'd like to see what Andrew and Christine provide.

Everything, and I mean everything, is made by hand from the original. I have experienced their hospitality so I know what I am talking about.
To answer roxley: a good diet, a little exercise and a sense of humour keeps me slim. I have a small appetite but I seem to survive.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 5:08pm
You mean all this time you've been indulging in pineapple cakes and little biscuits with cream on top and you've been encouraging me to eat marmite!!!
I hope that marmite goes straight to your thighs!
Posted: Mar 14, 08 1:04am
Britscot, would you consider acting as a shipping expediter for your friends' products if, shall we say, certain persons in the US were to order them?
Posted: Mar 13, 08 5:06pm
Pru, you know you could be on TV and give Craig Furgeson and David Letterman a run for thier money.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 5:10pm
I don't have a T.V. so I haven't seen them in a while...have they gotten that bad?
Posted: Mar 13, 08 5:12pm
I think Craig is funny as hell and so are you.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 5:15pm
Here's wishing you tons of moulah to go with alot of talent, goodness knows if you wrote a book or some other media , I would pay attention.
Posted: Mar 13, 08 5:16pm
You have no TV Ms Farquar?
I knew there was a reason I liked you.
