Life Changes

Uncle Spencer

If someone would have told me six months ago that I was about to be divorced, lose my father suddenly to a brain aneurism, almost lose my daughter in a car accident, lose my job to a layoff and have my stepfather go through heart surgery, I wouldn't have believed it. But that has been my life and I have realized that for most of my 49 years, I have been truly blessed and really didn't know a lot of hardship.

The saying goes that God works in mysterious ways and I believe that wholeheartedly. I know all these changes, while very challenging and downright scary at times, are working toward a greater plan that only He knows and can explain. I know that my lot, compared to many people, has been an easy one. I have also realized that the measure of a person's character is his or her reaction to the challenges that arise in life and not the accomplishments that may be on the resume achieved during the good times.

At this point, I need to find some work. I live in southcentral PA, near Chambersburg and have an excellent work history, having managed a construction company for 15 years. I have a BA in English and an MBA. I'm good with numbers, organization, writing and people. I would consider about anything. My dream job would be making a living using my writing skills, but I know that is a long shot. If anyone has any ideas for me, I am open to suggestions.

I have continued to get a lot of supportive comments from the folks at TDB and have two friends that I speak with on a regular basis that I have met through this website. I really appreciate their help and freindship, along with everyone else. I want to give everyone a sincere thank-you for everything!

This is the universe telling you....stop, take a break, it's time to regroup. Everything happens for a reason. You have been through alot in a very short period of time. Better things are coming your way.

The big question I have....who is your OTHER friend? Fess up Uncle!!!

Hi, Uncle Spencer. You don't know me, but i've been communicating off and on, on tbd, for about 5 mos, and both Jaki and spuff, those sometimes wildly funny tbders, are also my tbd,"friends".

What you have experienced in the past 6 mo. or so, sounds almost unbelievably painful. Yet, your optimistic spirit is shining through, in which you are stating that your belief in, and reliance on God, and your close friends, has enabled you to be courageous and hopeful through it all.

I, too, have had many painful losses, surgeries, and disappointments in the past several years, that I'm not going to go in to. However, I am learning to focus on daily gratitude, and all of my many blessings, esp. my dear, 29-year husband, daughter, and son.

As far as finding a new job/career, you seem to have very marketable skills, with your writing, BA, MBA, people skills, etc. Have you considered phoning/approaching your area newspaper staffs for newpaper/ journalism work, or tried the popular online job post called,"Craig's List", and/ or considered placing ads, listing your job/education qualifications, etc., in local publications? Sometimes networking in local chat rooms can lead to available jobs, also.

One of our talented townsmen found tons of work, by placing ads in our local papers, that he would do handyman, odd-job, house/yard jobs! Senior citizens, widows, widowers etc., and retirement community folks especially need this type of assistance. You might also have Amish, and others, in your area, who pay to have drivers transport them to areas that their buggies can't reach.

I wish you the luck 'O the Irish, on this St. Patrick's Day, Uncle Spencer, and then some, to stay strong, focused, and motivated, and hopefully, something will eventually come through for you!
