Crime in D.C. schools
Last April, TBD reporter Sarah Larimer filed a Freedom of Information Act request to D.C. police for all records of incident reports at public and private schools in the District going back to 2009. This past August, after Larimer took a job at Grantland.com, the documents started to roll in. The police sent TBD a document listing every incident (PDF) as well as hundreds of individual incident reports. They’re presented here with all original spelling intact and only the names of suspects and victims redacted in the rare cases that they’ve been left in. Some of the reports are heartbreaking, some are bizarre, and more than you’d think involve weaponized tape dispensers. There are lots of banal incidents, and a couple that should probably be feature stories (like this one). You can download the original spreadsheet we made here or sort these data yourself in the table below.

Once within the location, officers were advised that S-1 entered a classroom to monitor her childs behavior with permission from the school. S-1 noticed that her child was not cooperating with school faculty and was being disruptive. At which point, S-1 grabbed her child, and in front of approximately 15 students between the ages of 4-5, started to hit her child around the buttocks area with a belt. W-1 requested MPD's assistance in preparing for a representative from Child Family Services to arrive at the location upon school dismissal. S-1 returned to the school to pick up her child at approximately 1504 hours. W-2 tried advising S-1 that she had to speak with school administrators in reference to picking up her child. S-1 started becoming irate yelling and getting in front of W-1's face stating, Where is my child? W-1, along with MPD entered the classroom and advised S-1 to leave the area in order to discuss the matter within a private atmosphere and away from the children. S-1 became loud and boisterous yelling at MPD and W-1 stating DOnt run up on me like that. Whatdo you think your doing? MPD Officers proceeded to escort S-1 out of the classroom when S-1 forceably shoved an MPD Officer into the wall using both arms stating Dont you touch me. | Weapons: None Specified Property: None Specified | Description: R-1, the custodian for the Ron Brown School located at the listed address, stated that upon coming to work he discovered the glass door to the cafeteria office broken. Upon further inspection, R-1 discovered the rear door to the cafeteria, leading out of the school, both unlocked and opened. Officers on the scene did observe teh damaged door to the office as well as open drawers to the desk in the office, which appeared to be rifled through. It is unclear at this time if anything as removed from the school. Officer Kimball took photos of the scene; however the scene was contaminated by bot the custodian and school resource officers on the scene prior to MPD arrival, therefore crime scene did not respond. Additionally, a complete walk through of the school was conducted with negative results. Also, it should be noted that school resouce officers indicated that there may be video of the school interior, however they were unable to obtain the code to access said video at this time.*Further investigation revealed that this should be a Thfet and not a Burglary.
