TBD Notes The single thing you must know

Bartolomeo Pagano rose from burly dockworker to Italian movie star with his turn as Maciste in 1914’s “Cabiria,” the first of several films in which he portrayed the strongman slave. To his worldwide fans, the actor and character were one and the same, and apparently he had trouble distinguishing, too, as he eventually adopted Maciste as his legal name. Maciste all’Inferno (or Maciste in Hell), from 1925, was his final film before retiring, and he ended his career in style: Sent to hell, he punches his way out. Expect pianist Andrew Simpson, an experienced silent film accompanist, to work the lower registers till he’s dripping sweat. From the preservation series "From Vault to Screen: Il Cinema Ritrovato," featuring films from the famous festival in Bologna, Italy. (Ryan Kearney)
