Watch the earthquake hit, from inside the Washington Monument
The National Park Service has posted three surveillance videos showing the scene inside the Washington Monument when last month's earthquake hit. In the clip below, an NPS ranger and others flee down a spiral staircase as debris rains down. It appears several people fell down, and that a real-life George Costanza stepped over them in his rush to get out.

Used condoms and syringes are washing ashore in Delaware
Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee brought torrential rains to the area, causing flooding and a sewage overflow in Prince George's County. In Delaware, it's bringing a sea of nastiness to two small towns.

PETA thinks animal cruelty and porn are the perfect match
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' print ads are less about provocation than titillation, revealing as much nudity as the Norfolk-based nonprofit thinks it can get away with. Butt cracks are fair game, apparently, but nipples are not. Some might argue that it's one step removed from soft-core porn. But wait, what's this? PETA is actually launching a porn site? Yes.

Only in California is the smog worse than it is here
If you happen to live in Los Angeles and were thinking of escaping the notorious air pollution there by moving to our region, you might want to reconsider. Washington is tied with Baltimore for sixth on a list of the country's smoggiest "areas," behind only cities in California, and are tied for third among "large metropolitan areas," behind Riverside-Bernadino and Los Angeles–Long Beach.
