As my focus is "sudden" (or "flash") fiction i am always casting about for publications seeking same. In reading about this weekend's 8th Annual LitQuake Festival (San Francisco) I discovered a lit magazine called "Opium." It's fringey... the editors are not in the market for status quo, conventional fiction. But here's what grabbed me: a contest for the best short story of 250 or fewer words.
Think about that for a minute. As of the word "minute" I'd already used 72 words.
There are masters in this form, not the least of whom is Tobias Wolff. This is not writing for the faint of heart. You must be willing to break rules, dispel boundaries, invoke angels and devils, light the page on fire - with a ruthless economy.
What a challenge! This particular contest is being judged by Aimee Bender, a mindbender of a storymaker if ever there was one.
