DANGER
Silently, the girder smashed into the sidewalk in front of her, shattering the concrete and shooting shards of cement into the sky. Suddenly, she felt rough hands grip her shoulders and spin her around. The face lunging into hers was bright red, its yellow hard hat bobbing up and down so hard she thought it was going to fall off. The man was screaming at her, his lips flabby and furious.
She stared intently at his face, trying to read what the lips were saying.
“YOU SILLY BITCH,” he sputtered, spattering spittle at her face.
“DIDN’T YOU HEAR ME YELLING AT YOU? TELLING YOU TO STOP? WHAT ARE YOU . . . DEAF? “
Her hands shaking, Julie formed her right hand into the sign for “yes”, nodded her head, and spoke.
“Yes.” She said. “I am.”
