THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

The short version is: there are no rules.

The long version is: there are no rules.

Am envisioning this as an invigorating and convivial conversation among good friends about writing, and writers… about life’s twists and turns, about the price of tea in China, about God’s role in man’s life, about man’s role in God’s life, about how many fish swim in the sea… about anything at all under tonight’s yellow wedge of moon.

Prepare to exercise unbridled imagination,

boundless good humor,

unlimited vision,

and of course the usual TWG absence of good taste.

I am sorry that I did not RSVP earlier than this, and I hope this is the proper spot to do so now. I would like to bring the mystery writer Rex Stout with me to the soiree this evening.

Rex Stout is, among other things, the author of the long-lived and much-loved "Nero Wolfe" murder mystery series. The series consists of 33 novels and 39 short stories involving the super-investigator Wolfe, as told through the eyes of his wise-cracking assistant, Archie Goodwin.

I bring Mr. Stout to the party because of the high intelligence, low violence-level, and great good humor of the series. Before writing any of the novels in my own "Exile" murder mystery series, I read at least one Nero Wolfe mystery to get in the mood.

No Rules?! None at all??? How much fun is that?! I mean, so then... what the hell are we supposed to break?

Far be it for me to be upstartian towards, at, or in the general direction of, her High-lili hi-lili hi-lowliness, but I kind of emphatically DEMAND that there absolutely should probably be rules. And make them tough rules, durable rules, scratch- and impact-resistant rules. Rules that one must get a real good running start at if one is to successfully break one (one of the rules, that is, not oneself - we don't want rules quite that indestructible.) Rules that are fragile and easy to break are little better than no rules at all - by the time most people arrive they will already be borken and a borken rule is void where prohibited, i.e., anywhere outside of bork and it's three moons. People launching themselves at the rules is a lot of what I go to parties of this kind to see. I suppose the foregoing suggests that I often go to parties of this kind. That would be a false reading. There has never been a party of this kind, other than, of course, that one next week in Fresno with the salamanders.
