Proofreading tool

Hi folks,

I'm relatively new to TBD and to this group. I'm an avid reader/writer and am working on a couple of projects right now -- one fact, one fiction. Proofreading gets painful after a few passes, so I thought I would share a proofreading tool that I use. It's a website that converts electronic text to audible speech. The site, called YAKiToMe! (http://www.yakitome.com) is free. (This is not an ad and I don't get anything for posting this.)

I find that listening to my writing gives me an expanded perspective on what I'm trying to say and helps me think of different ways of expressing myself. I also use the site to listen to books and important documents written by others.

If you have experience with other proofreading tools, or find other useful ways of using the YAKiToMe! website, please let me know.

skibum_not, Welcome! Glad to have you in our midst. Thanks for this tip. I see its value but would also point out its apparent limitations regards nuts-and-bolts proofreading for spelling, proper punctuation, consistency of format, etc. (Also, although perhaps just a random Internet glitch, the site crashed my connection when I opened it.)

Would be interested in knowing more about your works in progress.

Hi akabukowski,

Curious. I haven't run into any problems with the site, yet, though they are in beta. Otherwise, I wouldn't have recommended it. What happened when you went to the site and what do you mean it crashed your connection? Since an audio file of a book can be quite big, I imagine the site works best with a high-speed connection.

You're right about format, there's no feedback about format with an audio file. However, as for punctuation, pronunciation, and spelling, the site has helped me to catch lots of little mistakes.
