Short story;
I have always worked for others and thereby avoided the risk/reward of self-employment. My track record is strong relative to leveraging results (revenue and net) in a variety of settings (retail, sales management, manufacturing etc). However, my personality is that of a decision maker/leader and on more than one occassion my decision-making acumen has outpaced my job title :), with predictable consequences (all enterprises have risk,...just different types).
I want to align my personality, skills with my occupation and have an oportunity to do so.
Without being too indiscrete; here's the scenario
I head a brand of goods within my company that did not exist 2 years ago (the category does exist, but the brand name, positioning and go to market strategies are semi-unique). I have been at this since before the brand existed and I was the genesis of the thought process, ideas, sales relationships and logistical coordination of the projects (I know how that sounds, sorry).
The project has been a major success -0- to 20 million in revenue in 18 months. The brand has three employees (me and two suborinates).
One of our customers (retail partner) has a nice little business and our part of that business is more than enough to have a thriving home based business (e-tailing, support and fulfillment).
I know a few things that would make the business even better and have yet to offer up these ideas at work to my boss/owner. I could deploy this addition to the business as a new brand (my business) leveraging the relationships I have built with some current customers and a few ne ones. There are mutliple sources for the product (it is an import/distrubution business model). The scale is small enough that I could pull off the ramp up inventory needed and other start up costs and have enough saved for household expenses for 6 months without too much pain. This business could have a small impact (negative) to the existing business (a competiting product line within a small part of the business (sub 5%). However, it would NOT supplant the current business with these customers, just an alternative livign side by side in cyberspace vying for the clicker's attention.
How do I make this transition with integrity, What exposure do I have and What land mines am I not considering?
Thanks,
WCB
