I wouldnt suggest you leave a secure position to start your own business without a having a couple things in place first:

1. enough money set aside to cover your needs for a year, just in case the new biz gets off to a slow start

2. have taken the time to "pilot" or test your new business idea off-hours from your current job.

Then, once you feel more comfortable, you will probably be able to make a better decision as to when you'll quit your job.

At this point the real 'issue' is how to put aside enough money to cover my needs for a year, which is totally what would be the smart thing to do.

Regarding point 2 of your reply, I already 'tested' my business (it is was I used to do for a Company before taking the secure job I mentioned) and I know that not only it would work but I would not have to start from 'zero' but I could count on my previous 'customers' list, at least some of them.

Still, the initial costs and the first year expenses would be the real challange for me.

There is a chance that you might qualify for a SBA loan. Is that something you might be willing to check out? SBA typically has an office in most cities.
