I'm very sorry you had to go through such a horrible time. It's never easy losing members of the family, i've been there as well. That's one thing that's always bothered me about having pets, even though it's never stopped me. Even if they live their entire life illness free, odds are we'll still outlive them. Being a pet lover all my life, I recently became a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Your German shepherd is trying to maintain the same "pack" play routine she had with the Goldens (I'm sure you know that). Just make sure you're not letting her get away with any behavior you normally wouldn't because of your grief.

The right time is different for everyone. Here's the best piece of advise I was ever given about this. Cherish the memories and the love you had (and still have)for the ones you lost. But remember, there's ALWAYS another animal out there that needs to be loved. Don't think you're being callous by getting a new pet fairly soon after losing one. You're just continuing to share your caring and love.

Thanks for your reply. It was hard just for me to look at the picture of my "gone but not forgotten" without a tear or two. I have had animals all my life, but losing these two was especially difficult because they were the only company I had during a long and nasty divorce. They got me through so much, I was determined to make their golden years a doggy heaven-but unfortunately I only got to spoil them for two years after my vow before I lost them, within 6 months of each other. I know we will get another dog, maybe I just feel disloyal somehow, but I know that I did the best I could as an owner and I don't need to let grief overwhelm me. Life goes on, and Ruby needs a pal. :-) Maybe this spring...thanks again for letting me vent some!
