Please contribute your thoughts on Pride and Prejudice, both the book and film productions.
Thanks!

Wood Elf, you must be reading my mind!
Okay, continuation of the discussion on Sense and Sensibility... yes, I totally agree that the BBC version (with Colin "The Ultimate Darcy" Firth) is the best Pride and Prejudice film adaptation ever.
Did you like Keira Knightly's version? I loved her and the Darcy in the film, but I HATED all the actors who played her family (except for Jane) and Bingly and all of them. The sisters in particular were a giggling bunch of idiots.
By the way, Pride and Prejudice is my favorite Austen book of them all... which is your favorite?

Did you like Keira Knightly's version?

After viewing the BBC production so many times, I think that the Keira Knightley version had a difficult time just fitting in all the small, humorous details. She is a fabulous actress, but I have to agree that supporting cast members were dull, indeed, in comparison to the BBC version.
Why is it that Mr. Darcy is the man of our dreams as well? I mean, he is initially perceived to be arrogant and self-centered and rude, but then his passion and generosity are revealed over time. I suppose his quiet nature and extreme wealth are initially misunderstood as that arrogance and snobbishness, but all along the reader knows he is "the ultimate" as you put it.
I have to agree that Pride and Prejudice is likely my favorite Austen novel as well. The ideal of true love winning over all obstacles (money, connections, scandal, etc.) is just too romantic to brush off as just another romance novel. You can see their passion for one another from the very beginnings and then throughout the entire novel it's just one thing after another until you almost believe they'll never realize their passion. But then, in classic Austen style, it rings true for both couples.
I have to admit I am a romantic at heart, but I haven't even considered reading modern romance novels. So, if any of you know of some that are as good as Austen's, please post the titles.

I'm also a romantic at heart. I agree totally with your comments. It's was on the other night and I was so glad I got the chance to watch it.
Pride and Prejudice is defiantly my fave! I've never read any modern day romance but the old stuff is awesome! Love all the movie versions as well. I've watched them over and over again!
Okay, it's not exactly a modern romance, but my favorite post-Austen romance novel is E.M. Forester's Room with a View. You've probably read it, but if you haven't, it's GREAT.
I love Jane Austen and have read all her novels.
However, I read them a long time ago so it's hard to remember.
But I will say this, Pride and Prejudice, as I recall, was quite humorous and not a dull moment in the whole novel.
I saw the movie with Keira Knightley and I also enjoyed that, but it's very hard for any movie to compete with Jane Austen's novel.
