Actually, I really loved this book, but for some reason, I felt like Austen didn't "explain" Wentworth's character very well. He treats her pretty coldly for most of the book, and while my imagination led me to believe he did it to deal with his pain, it's sort of a shocker when he declares that women are fickle and men are true. Since he was the one acting like he was courting that whatshername-fall-off-the-wall-in-Bath lady.

Okay, me again with the movies... I thought the Amanda Root version was great, but thought they made her too homely throughout the movie. Ciarán Hinds though. Sigh... he was marvelous.

Yes, I must agree. It is odd that he virtually ignores her...and I also concluded that he was deeply hurt and wanted to save his dignity or pride or what have you. And then Louisa (was that her name?) openly flirts with him (I thought that was unheard of in those times) and then attempts to jump into his arms (talk about throwing yourself at a man)! Maybe Wentworth just wanted Anne to feel like he did–cast off, but then he doesn't strike me as being calculating like that. It was odd, but then people do behave oddly for so many reasons unknown to us.

Okay, I am going to have to hit the video store on my way home from my daughter's ballet class tonight.

I don't really know why this is one of my favorite Austen stories. It may be the theme that love has second chances. Anyone who is in a committed relationship knows that simple yet complex reality. It may be because a quiet, reasonable, humble, intelligent and plain woman is loved despite all. What do you think?

Yes totally. I actually love the general story line in this book too... I just think the other characters treat Ann so poorly that it's a bit hard to read at times. Especially the way Wentworth is with her. I guess I just wish there was a scene before the last one that's gives the reader a better hint at how much they loved each other once.
