Many people tell me that they didn't enjoy Persuasion as much as other Jane Austen novels. When I read it, I enjoy it.
I guess I can appreciate how social life worked in those times. People, especially those with connections and money, didn't necessarily marry for love. Love was likely an added bit of fortune. Social ladder climbing was very important. I suppose it still is today to some degree, although opportunities are amazingly different in comparison.
I appreciated the focus on her family's financial troubles, as that would have played into most of their decision making. The true romance is that Anne and Captain Wentworth overcame the past and reconnected with a greater love and admiration for one another than the first time around. I am a happily married woman, but I can tell you that I love and admire my husband more than when we we younger.
What do you think of Persuasion?
