I think as many of us become empty nesters and/or retire, we have more time to devote to non-profit organizations. I do hope that the trend continues. They are an important source of social service in many of our communities.

I have always been a financial contributor to several organizations, but now am also donating my time.

I have a particular expertise (labor law), so my hours can vary dramatically from month to month. I sat on a couple of boards,but I spend time commuting between three homes and it was hard for me to make board meetings, so I've pretty much given that up. In one or two cases, where I have name recognition, I have stayed on the board just so they can use my name. We both understand that I won't be at too many board meetings.

This month, October, I'll do close to 20 hours. But my preferred participation level is about 10 hours/ month.

I've worked as paid staff for non-profits for the past 15 years. First, a very small one, under 30 people, and now a very large one. I have some expertise in how they function at a management level and have had limited interactions with BODs. I cannot imagine not working for a non-profit, but as I get older it becomes more difficult because the pay is not high. Fortunately, in my current role, the pay is fairly competitive, but most are far from it.

In my current org, we bring in about 30 people a month - young ones under 30 - about half of them who are there want to make a difference.

My entire career has been with nonprofits. I'm currently unemployed and am doing some volunteer work with two. One is Trips for Kids-- an organization in San Rafael. Their 20th anniversary fundraiser is coming up and I'm doing some media for them. They are having a big dinner/auction with some great items. The organization helps kids in the Canal district-- they take them on bike rides and also work with them to learn to be bike mechanics. One kid just got a job at Mike's.

I also work with San Francisco AIDS Foundation. I ride the AIDS Lifecycle ride from SF to LA in June and raise money that way, but I also act as a spokesperson for the ride, going to people's fundraisers and also talking to the media.

I've recently just found out about KIVA, which gives microloans to entrepreneurs in other parts of the world. A very interesting and worthwhile organization.

I am involved with an american company that created a nonprofit organization down in South America. Since I am from Brazil and the organization is in Brazil, I feel very honored to be able to help the people down in my country. The name of the project is M.O.R.E. More help, more love, and above all, more hope.

I am involved directltly as a board member and volunteer in two organizations. I also recently created a blog that is designed to be a bulletin board for nonprofits in my area. I've been blessed with a good life. It's time that I give back
