At this point in my life, I am retired, so my time is my own. When I was working, I did much less non-profit work. I was part of a law firm and we did take on some pro bono clients. Otherwise, I felt is was only fair to use vacation time or unpaid time if I was participating in my non-profit activities during work hours. Certainly an occasional phone call or email is OK, but the bulk of the time you are at work should be devoted to doing the work of your employer.

I'm fortunate in that the opportunities available to me occur during the day, nights, and weekends.

I do take time from work occasionally and use my accrued 'PTO' time for volunteering.

I volunteer at my church. Most vol.hours are nights and weekends. There are some times when weekday times such as meetings are an issue. I am self employed. My hours are my own.
