It was written by my dad, a few years ago. Quite a few years ago.
Thank Heavens for Little Girls
You may have heard the phrases of that old and well-known song,
The man who wrote those praises of "Those Little Girls" was wrong.
He must have been a grandpa - not the father of those tykes.
He never mentioned things I saw - things father never likes.
He never mentioned sleepless nights - or diapers I have changed,
He never mentioned parent's rights - or schedules rearranged.
There were no words about the times that one or more was sick.
I don't recall within those rhymes how they would scream and kick.
The man who wrote or sang those words could not a father be.
It's obvious he's not endured their 'growing pains' like me.
The nights that they stayed out too late - "They just forgot to call."
They wondered why I got irate - they weren't impressed at all.
The cost of sending them to school - I thought would never end.
A man is obviously a fool who thinks they do not spend.
I suffered through 12 years or more while educating three.
Thank Heavens, college days are o'er - they all got their degree.
Thank Heavens, they are now all grown - my mind should be at ease.
Their Mom and I are all alone to do just as we please.
But somehow that is not as great as I thought it would be.
Those things that once made me irate now wouldn't bother me.
"Thank Heavens for Those Little Girls" - oh, yes, the man was right.
It's funny how, in different worlds, you see a different light.
I'd like to try it all again - I think they'd understand
Their father's seemingly disdain was temper out of hand.
They've started families of their own - and two of them have girls.
I've heard the fathers growl and moan - (I think they're perfect pearls).
So now the words to that old song makes sense to this old man.
Somehow the fathers must be wrong - as sometimes fathers can.
And so, I guess I see the light - a grandpa wrote that song.
As fathers often are not right - grandpas are never wrong.
The longer we live in this life - the more that life unfurls
I find I'm saying to my wife - "Thank God for Little Girls."
