My best teachers were my retired neighbors. I enjoyed watching Agnes with her evening ritual. She would always make a bourbon and soda high ball at 5:00. One jigger and the rest soda. She would pick up the phone and call her retired friend Betty. The two would chat for a half an hour or so.
Then she would make a small salad, pop a tiny filet of beef in the oven an broil it. While she dined on her meal at the table with silverware and cloth napkin she would watch the news or some program of interest. I would visit Agnes while struggling with my two little boys and think one day I might have this peace. I loved her rituals and the way she took care of herself. She never let being alone get in her way.
If you are interested I will tell you about my other very interesting retired neighbors and how they cooked for 2 on a modest living.
