You don't happen to live near a hospital, do you?

A little visit to the cancer ward to see what the future might hold has been known to work wonders.

Everyone is allowed to be young and dumb. Hopefully they figure it out before its too late and permanent.

My daughter has seen what my brother has gone thru.He has been having treatments for years,all over his body.

My niece,his daughter sees it first hand.Some how,in so many ways,people think it won't happen to them.

My husband has a birth mark on his leg that should be removed,he won't go,yet his mom suffered and died at age 47 .

I wear sunscreen whenever I go outside,even on my hands.

My brother has to wear the stronges sunscreen,indoors in the daytime

This is true.But when you see first hand what melanoma does...and then go bake yourself..that's beyond dumb.

Maybe they're too close to it. Having been brought up with it, they think "well, I guess when you get to be a certain age, in this family, you just get melanoma and die. Might as well enjoy the ride."

Hearing some new stories, from people who never expected it, might help.

Otherwise, I have no new ideas, except the usual one of asking her to take out a life insurance policy to pay for her own funeral, because if she dies of melanoma you're going to refuse to pay for anything more than a pauper's unmarked grave. It's just a few bucks a month, but a constant reminder that she's probably killing herself.

It is hard.The young especially never think they'll die.

I've even tried the Oh,you're ruining your skin...I know that I've tried.That's all I can do.

Marge unfortunately for us the young think they are invincible (didn't we at that age?) I've pushed wearing sunscreen with our daughter from a very early age & she's mostly very good about it. She also has the evidence of my skin problems (nothing major) over the years from sun damage. I make sure she knows all about it every time I visit the dermatologist & have to have another biopsy or mole removal.

We're at the point now where her pale skin doesn't worry her as much as it did when she was younger. When she went to prom she was au natural - no tanning at all & I think she looked gorgeous. With her pale skin & her bronze dress she looked as good or better than some of her overtanned friends. (Nothing like a mom's bias!)

Now if I could just get her to slow down on the road & not drive quite so close to other cars I'd be over the moon.
