IT employment in the coming years

I won't retire for another 11 years minimum , and the current scut is

that there will be 'dire', and 'drastic' shortages of experienced

IT network people. Am considering jumping off into contract work

in a few years to take advantage of that, any thoughts anyone?

I'm not an IT guy, per se, but I have been a freelance website developer for 12 years. I think that one thing you need to keep in mind is what technology you're going to specialize in. The other is how you're going to find clients.

I was also going to say something about "outsourcing," but I'm not so sure that that has affected my business all that much. I still seem to be able to find clients that prefer to work with someone that's local or with whom they can easily contact by phone.

There have been quite a few articles on the technologies specialize in to take advantage of the upcoming needs. DBA, web-based programming (java, AJAX, Python), and VOIP skills seems to be leading the list. If you can focus there, you should be okay.
