For me, it was "The Fountain"; I wrote about it extensively on my website, but that movie just left me speechless.

So gorgeous.

So moving.

So very, very un-Hollywood.

Today I found out that Darren Arnofsky has recorded a commentary on MP3 to play along with the movie, and I was very happy and really hope it will open a new window to this amazing film.

Looks like Netflix doesn't have "Last Night" yet but I added it to my Queue :)

I had to catch "Last Night" on IFC... so if you have that, keep an eye open there.

A few films that continue to haunt me are films I saw in either 2000 or 2001 while still living in San Francisco at the monthly(?) Key Club movie screenings. Two that really stick out are, "Behind the Sun" and "Fat Girl," both foreign films.

"Behind the Sun" is beautifully filmed(and the cast is gorgeous!) Directed by the same guy who did Central Station, it's an interesting take on a blood feud between two Brazilian families.

"Fat Girl" is a haunting French film about a girl who has struggled with weight all her life and lives in the shadows of her beautiful, thinner older sister. The ending is shocking!

"The Party," a 1968 comedy starring Peter Sellers, had my family laughing hysterically.

Last night, my husband and I watched "Miracle at Midnight," an excellent film for when you want to be reminded about, and inspired to do, the good and courageous things people can do for each other.

"Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould" . And I'm not really a big classical music fan.

I'm sure there are other - let me think about it...

I love The Quiet Earth, an SF movie that's about as unknown as you can get. Another good one is Muriel's Wedding, though I think it's probably better known now that Toni Collette is a more familiar face in the US. Or am I just assuming something?

I'm surprised that The Fountain would be considered unknown. But it wasn't a smash at the box office, and I've seen comments about it like: "huh?"

A few months ago, I saw Tony Takitani on DVD. I had heard about it from a friend because it co-stars the famous Japanese model, Rie Miyazawa (she's famous for taking artistic nude photos just barely out of her teens). Also it's an adaptation of a Haruki Murakami short story.

But nothing about the description prepares you for this movie... definitely one where the less you know, the better. It was gorgeous, odd, thoughtful, quiet, moving, haunting, funny, beautiful... really a treat. I'm still thinking about it...
