1Sa 21:13 And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.
For those of us that have been afflicted with mental illness, or knowing someone that is, this is truly a remarkable passage in the Bible. It is about David and his day of madness. Would that all mental illness only last for a day.
David had been cruelly persecuted by Saul and his life was in danger on all sides. Saul did not want David to take over the kingdom. David was brought to King Achish who was an ally of Saul and was predisposed to murder David. But sly old David pretended that he was crazy and in disgust Achish let him go free with no harm. Achish was insulted by mental illness.
I don't particularly know any one that had a reason to portray themselves as a madman, that just happens when the brain chemicals go array. But we do insult people with mental instability. We do tend to dismiss them. We do not want our dignity insulted with this type of unbalance. The sad fact is that when we played cowboys and Indians as children, it was make believe and we could stop the role playing at any point. For the mentally ill, relief only comes as good as the treatment. Since Psychiatry is only 60 years old in practice, that is why it is called a practice while we can't yet bring ourselves to say science when a loved one or ourselves are stricken.
I believe this passage is given as a glimmer of hope and not meant to be derogatory. I believe David did what he had to do to preserve his life. The mentally ill often have to escape into their little world where the mind protects from some unsavory events in life. Not an excuse, but a plea on our part to become educated and knowledgeable and accepting of others. Theirs is a life worth preserving also. If you know someone that needs help, keep on insisting they get it. And if you are one of the 17 million people in America each year who are afflicted with depression, you will certainly realize that there is help available for those that desperately want that quality of life to be restored to normal.
