Job 24:12 Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out.
Today is Veteran's Day. Statistically, almost a third of veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq confront mental health problems. In 2006, the suicide rate in the Army reached its highest level in 26 years. Approximately 40% of homeless veterans have mental illnesses. Concern and support is slow to come for our Veteran's who also find it difficult to admit help is needed.
As we enjoy the freedom's in America, and as we "celebrate" this National holiday with a day off of work, little is done to recognize that these men and women are suffering. We would rather dismiss them with a , "Such is life," mindset and perhaps a flag flown on this day.
It is not enough. It is barbaric to not make this nation aware that freedom comes with a price tag. These Veteran's are still waging a war, and some will now do that for the remainder of their lives.
If you have not done a thing in the past to honor a Veteran or become involved in their transition back on our native soil, I challenge you to, at the very least, take a moment of your time and lift a prayer to God in their behalf. American pride is a great thing, but not if we shoot the wounded by sticking our heads in the sand.
