Gen 12:9-13 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.
Abraham (Abram) was a servant of God and had covenant with Him that through his seed, all people's would be blessed because a Savior would come through his genealogy. He had not the promised son yet, Isaac, and he feared for his life that he would be killed before he would see the promise come to pass.
We all have fears. We all have dreams and visions. We all want to live, yet God has said, the soul that sins shall die. We have all sinned and the only remedy and redemption for mankind is the precious blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, born, suffered, and crucified to redeem us in full.
Abram could not comprehend the fullness of God's salvation plan, but he knew that his life had some some part in it. He feared his imminent death to the point that he asked his beloved mate, Sarah, to lie and say she was his sister and not wife so that his life would not be taken. He feared for his soul because he did not know where it would go upon his death.
We are a blessed people for we know the way to heaven and where the soul goes . If we have accepted Christ Jesus as personal Lord and Savior of our life, our soul will immediately return to God for safekeeping until the day of judgment. Our body dies, but the soul remains a living reality. If we reject God's plan of salvation, our soul shall face the torment of an everlasting hell.
Perhaps now you can see Abram's depth of concern over his life. And perhaps you now can see how blessed you are to have eternal security. All it takes is a bow of the head, the prayer of confession that you are a sinner, the plea of forgiveness, and the word's, "Jesus come into my heart and have your way. I will serve you to my dying breath, and I rejoice that I am now a child of the most high."
May you carefully consider what you have just heard and find the peace in knowing your soul will live. Amen
