Hello Everyone,
I have had a life-long admiration for horses and their riders. I finally, at age 47, decided it was time to turn my fantasy of being a horseman into reality. I took up lessons at a local barn this past summer and met some local horse owners/riders who have been wonderful about teaching me what they know as well as loaning me horses to ride. I have been on several trail rides now and even tried sorting cattle a few times. I have a very long way to go to be a true "horseman" but I am very happy I stopped dreaming about it and actually put things into motion.
A few of the things I was told I need to experience to be a true "horseman" have already happened. I have sorted cattle a few times, I was not thrown but have fallen off (my friends said that counts), and I have been caught in the open during a very hard down pour. I know I have many more experiences and time in the saddle to qualify but I am enjoying it all so far. I hope to have a few horses of my own someday soon. I have plenty to learn before I take on that responsibility.
I will appreciate gleaning from the experiences of those here in the group.
Michael
